GAIL Gas in South City: The long 7-8 years wait is over.
 
 
The piped natural gas by GAIL is finally coming in after a long wait of 7-8 years by the South City residents. This GAIL Gas project was earlier initiated by Sugruha in 2017-18 which had subsequently hit some roadblocks.  
 
 
Our heartfelt thanks to:
 
  • Shri Tejasvi Surya (Member of Parliament)

  • Dr C. N. Manjunath, (Member of Parliament)

  • Shri M. Krishnappa (MLA)

  • Shri M. Satish Reddy (MLA) and

  • Shri M Jayaram (ex Corporator for our area)

for their support for restarting the GAIL Gas project in South City. We, also, were told by reliable sources that Shri Tejasvi Surya took special interest and intervened a couple of times as part of supporting the J.P.Nagar wards.
 
Dr C.N. Manjunath and Shri M. Krishnappa unblocked and expedited work for our area, thereby working cohesively towards accelerating GAIL Gas connectivity to South City
 
The then Sugruha Board President, Shri V Venugopalan and his team, who, over the past 4-5 months, reached out to our MPs, MLAs, ex-Corporators, and several GAIL officials for restarting the PNG (piped natural gas) project in our homes in South City.
 
It was an arduous task of connecting, coordinating, and getting various clearances of a project long considered “dead”.  Over this period, possible solutions were worked out to connect to the GAIL Gas grid, and finally, on 05 June 2025, the GAIL Gas project commenced after a Pooja near Gate 2 of South City; Registration and Q&A sessions were organized by Sugruha, and one can see the pipe laying machine working actively on the South City Road. Special thanks to Sugruha team led by the President.
 
The South City apartment PNG project will be done in phases and is expected to be completed in 8-10 months’ time. While SCMC is already coordinating with GAIL contractors in laying the gas pipeline and other related activities, we request the residents to be patient and cooperative these few months.
 
Please patiently wait for clarifications GAIL Gas Limited, and this process as such is owned by GAIL Gas Limited and we are only enabling the process.

Updates

-23/Aug/2025: GAIL Gas is working towards completing the stretch  from outside Gate 1 leading towards Elita apartments awaiting BESCOM approval. Once the gas line reaches Gate 1, expected around 15th Sept,  the GAIL team will work to their plan to complete internal work.

- 06/Aug/2025: GAIL GAS Camp for South City Residents at 10:00am at New Club House Ground Floor (Queries and applications)

 
Update history
- 09/Jul/2025: SCMC/JLL and GAIL Gas meeting to initiate project implementation activities 
- 26/Jul/2025: Gail Gas Vertical riser pipes  delivered to South City for A1 A2 blocks, and readiness activities in progress
- 01/Aug/2025: 400 Meter pipeline being manually dug, for safety reasons,  to allow for connectivity outside South City 
- 02/Aug/2025: GAIL Gas has initiated work with JLL/SCMC on 2/Aug/2025.  Individual stock of Meters brought in by GAIL. 
- 02/Aug/2025: Notice issued by SCMC to A1, A2 blocks that external piping and GAIL Gas meter work will be starting the coming week by GAIL. Detailed work plan being prepared by GAIL.

Residents who registerd applications pre-2020

 

Assigned BP Number starting 4000***

The then plan was No-Flexi Standard. This includes first 90 Day supply included

The initial SD Amount to be paid: Rs 5500. This will be payable to GAIL Gas

Incase you have the bank statement that shows payment has been made to GAIL (approx Feb 2018 to Feb 2020), any payments received by GAIL will be accounted for. 

 

The 90 day supply starts when the meter moves from 0000 reading. 

 1. Those who registered before 2020, they opted the No-Flexi standard, they have to pay the security deposit after the gas supply charged in your apartment, now the security deposit is 4500/- Upfront payment at the time of gas being connected .

Residents who registered applications after 2020 and New Applicants:

 

The initial Security Deposit amount to be paid is Rs 4500. There is no 90 day promo scheme now

 

 
  • What is included
    • 15 meters free piping with one point provided by GAIL
    • 2 replacement nozzles(jets) for your gas stove, any additional will be chargeable (approx 75Rs per Nozzle)
    • Additional queries will be answered by the project team at the time of installation
  • There was a registration fees of 358Rs which is currently being waived off. Pre-2020 applicants  who have paid - will be adjusted in the bill
  • Once BP Number is created for a flat, it stays till a disconnection request is recieved by GAIL. Thje plan applicable is to the BP Number
  • Earlier GAIL used to take cheques, to speeden up, GAIL online payment link will be shared. For most post 2020 applicants the GAIL Link has been shared via sms. 
  • PLEASE NOTE: Kindly do not pay any individual for GAIL GAS. Any payments can be made directly to GAIL Gas through the GAIL GAS authorised online link.
  • So far we have not received any information for members to pay GAIL Gas. It will be closer to the time of the connection being given.

6 GAIL technical team will inspect the gas hob and at the max there will be  nozzle change which will be done by the  Gail technical team. At no cost. Response from GAIL Gas: "Yes that nozzle/ jet(under the knob of the hob)  our team will do free of cost up to 2 burners."  GAIL GAS

What if the  owner is abroad or out of city?

The connections in south city are being progressed on war footing. It would help you, if you could organise a your reliable contact to be present.

8 If the resident has registered and is no more ( passed away), can the connection be transferred to other family members by resubmitting the Ekyc document? Yes using the same procedure as noted above under category 2 please submit KYC to GAIL.  GAIL GAS

10. The pipe line was taken into kitchen before but needs realignment. Will Gail take requests for the same during ekyc or cheque collection or what is the process. Kindly discuss & request GAIL project team when they come to provide the connection GAIL GAS
11. The apartments has tenants living in it, what is the procedure to apply? 

It is an agreement between the tenant and the Owner. 

As per the form, Tenant fills in the top portion of the form, choosing "Rent"

For owners living outside and how to go about it

Only in case of Category 3 will you need to wait for the next camp.  In case of extended travel, or submit the form at the GAIL Office In HSR  on your return

 In case you fall under Category 1, 2 or 4 you could take actions as listed under each category

As of now no payment is required. GAIL will contact you closer to the action connection date.

GAIL Gas has been requested for an updated sheet. They have mentioned they will provide it before this weekend. Kindly check on Friday if you see the meter number. If not you could follow steps under category 2 and mention the meter number (generally starts with 194xxxxx) in your email to GAIL gas and that it was missing from the list. You would not need to attach the KYC documents if this it the only issue

Yes, the change is being done as per latest govt regulations.
The GAIL Gas team will visit, inspect the stove/hob and confirm if the nozzles can be replaced. If the hob/stove is very old (>15 year old) then this may require the hob to be replaced

Background:

Way back in 2018, Pavithran (Sugruha board member) had received information from his friend in MECON who was a consultant for GAIL Gas that GAIL is supplying piped natural gas to apartment complexes. This project was initiated with full force, and homes were fitted with meters etc. However, due to technical issues and COVID hitting us, this progress was halted.
